Importance of Brake Service

Without properly functioning brakes, your car is a safety hazard to you and other motorists on the road. Ignoring small brake issues can lead to big trouble down the road when your car won’t come to a complete stop when you hit the brake pedal. Taking care of brake issues right away and staying on top of brake service is key for decreasing wear and tear on your car.

In addition, sticking to routine maintenance appointments allows you to keep repair bills down and minimizes your chances of getting in an accident. Protecting the health, safety, and longevity of your car are all important aspects of vehicle ownership.

These factors are also relevant when it’s time to sell or trade in your car. Dealerships pay attention to service records and will determine the value of your car based on these records.

Brake Repair Warning Signs

Signs that your car may need a brake replacement or inspection include:

  • Strange sounds when braking
  • Car vibrating or shaking when braking
  • Brake pedal sticking
  • “ABS” symbol is lit up
  • Parking brake won’t engage
  • Brake pedal feels or appears soft/worn

How Often Should I Repair My Brakes?

In general, you’ll want to have your car’s braking system inspected every 10,000 miles. Your brake pads will need to be replaced every 40,000 to 50,000 miles at least, while your rotors should be replaced every 70,000 miles. The brake fluid in your car needs to be flushed and replaced every 30,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first.
