What You’ll Need

First, you need to have the right tools on hand to jump-start your battery. In addition to the battery that you need to charge, you also need a healthy battery in a second car. You’ll also need jumper cables to connect the batteries; Chevrolet offers this as an accessory so you can stay safeguarded in case of an emergency.

Setting Up

The first step in jump-starting your battery is getting your vehicle lined up with the other car so you can hook the two batteries up. Ideally, the cars should be placed next to each other, or facing nose-to-nose.

Jump-Starting the Battery

Now that the vehicles are in place, it’s time to jump-start the battery. First, shut both cars off. Then, remove the cap for the battery terminals (if applicable) to expose the metal on both vehicles.

On the healthy battery, connect one of the red jumper cables to the positive terminal, then connect the other red clamp to the red post on the dead battery. Next, connect the black clamp to the working battery, and finally, hook the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your vehicle.

Charge and Disconnect

Turn the other vehicle on and let it run for a while to charge the dead battery. Once your vehicle has started and run for a few minutes, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them: remove the black clamps first, and be careful as you remove the red clamps. Keep your car running for at least 15 minutes — which can include the drive to your destination — to ensure the battery keeps its charge.
